8 Ways to Elevate Your Home without going broke!

Today, we're tackling a common question: “How do I transform my space without going completely broke?” I hear you! Home decor, renovations, and making your space feel like home can be costly in terms of money, time, and effort. We want to get it right because of that! So here are 8 pieces of advice to help you turn your place into a home without breaking the bank. Let's get into it.

1. Paint - But Hear Me Out!

Starting with the obvious, paint. While it's not the cheapest in terms of money and time, it makes a huge impact. Colour saturation is all the rage now—painting walls, skirting, and ceiling the same colour creates a theatrical ambience. Wallpaper is also making a comeback, often paired with a complementary colour on the skirting. If you want to make an impact with minimal furniture, painting your space or even just the skirting boards can transform it from renter to real home quickly. Skip the accent wall; either commit to full-colour drenching or keep it neutral for now.

2. Upcycling Old Furniture

A fresh coat of paint and new hardware can turn a thrift store find into a statement piece. But don’t go overboard with DIY projects; too many can make your space feel like amateur theatre prop hour. Focus on one or two items, or strip furniture back to show off the wood. Techniques like whitewashing or bleach washing can lift and tint the wood to your liking. There are plenty of tutorials on Instagram and YouTube to help you out.

3. Hardware - Knobs, Pull Handles, and More

Don't forget the power of changing out hardware, especially if you're in a rental. Kitchen knobs, toilet holders, shower curtains—all can make a huge impact. I've even swapped out my kitchen tap for a vegetable sprayer. Just be sure to change them back when you move out so you can take your customised items to your next place.

4. Affordable Store Finds

Check out affordable stores like IKEA, Target, or online marketplaces like Facebook and eBay. Diversify and avoid making your space look like an IKEA or Kmart catalogue. Social media often pushes these hauls, but they’re more about content creation than great home pieces. Look for unique items across different platforms to create a personalised space.

5. Maximise Space with Smart Storage

For those of us in smaller homes or apartments, maximising space is crucial. Multi-purpose furniture is a game-changer—think sofa beds, fold-out desks, and storage ottomans. Smart storage solutions like under-bed storage can keep things organised and clutter-free. Mirrors can also make a space feel brighter and larger, serving as a great stand-in for custom artwork.

6. Create a Retreat Nook

Your home should be your sanctuary, a place to unwind and recharge. Adding plants brightens up your space, improves air quality, and boosts mental health. But don’t overdo it; a few well-placed plants styled properly make a big difference. Create cosy reading nooks with accent chairs or pull-out sofas—spaces that aren’t your typical sofa or bed. A home spa setup with candles and essential oils can also enhance relaxation.

7. Conscious Personal Style

A comfortable home environment plays a significant role in our mental health. Make sure your space reflects your personal style and brings you joy. The saying “You become who you surround yourself with” applies to your environment too. If your space isn’t considered, appreciated, or cohesive, it can reflect on you. Invest in your home as you would in your relationships.

8. Sustainable Living

Sustainable living is essential. Reducing waste, recycling, and choosing eco-friendly products can make your home stylish and planet-friendly. Simple changes, like using eco-friendly cleaning products, energy-efficient light bulbs, and buying second-hand furniture, can make a significant impact.

To recap: budget-friendly upgrades, maximising small spaces, creating a personal oasis, and sustainable living are all achievable goals. Share your home transformation stories with me on social media by tagging me in your posts!
