5 tips - Create a Stylish Console Moment

I feel like an entry table or sideboard works very similarly to what an artwork can do in your home. It's an indicator of what you like, value and the general mood you put out in your space whether you intended it to or not.

Don't neglect what is seemingly a simple piece of furniture you use as a regular drop-all-kinds surface. Sure, it holds your keys, shopping bags, your cap and whatnot. But, it also should act as an introduction to your space and what to expect of someone when visiting. If your console is haphazard and has no essence of functionality or decoration, then don't be surprised when your guests treat your home in that kind of manner as you haven't provided a bouncing off point to which they can pick up how to act.

So here are my 5 go-to tips to get your console singing all kinds of praise about you, your style and your fabulous home.

1.A Focal point

A significant focal point is an excellent place to start. Opt. for something with visual weight - and by this, I mean draws the eye and is the first place the eye lands. This piece is the kickstart of your console, so make sure it's an item you love.

2.Add height

I have noticed people are apprehensive about adding height. Don't be scared to add tall sticks to a vase or urn. Or opt for a table lamp. They serve great visual appeal as well as the practicality of mood lighting - which is hugely overlooked.

3.Go under the table

It's always about styling the top of the table, but don't forget the underside. Don't be afraid to add texture below the table. My favourite go-to's is baskets, a stool or extra seating like an ottoman.

4. Create Balance

End tables and side tables are shorter than console tables. Don't style it with all the elements at the centre or on one side. To create balance, place objects evenly on multiple sides of the table, layered towards the centre. Create small vignettes and work in the fore, middle and background.

5. Add A Natural or Organic Element

When layering a console table, we tend to stick with objects, such as books, boxes, lamps or vases. To add in the extra something, bring in natural/organic elements.

Pro Tips;

  • To achieve the effortless, lived-in look, ditch the symmetry. I feel like many people want to double up and do the same vignette on both sides. It's super amateur-ish and looks stuffy half of the time because the console isn't long enough to support so much stuff on both sides. Create visual cohesion with the height of your objects instead.

  • Also, less is more in most cases. Sure, you can go all out and create one beautiful eclectic masterpiece. However, I do feel like it needs to fit the rest of your space. So if your home isn't that, then opt for keeping things simple. Focus on the quality and interest of each item rather than the number of things you can fit.

  • Add a candle or diffuser to get a nice scent happening as soon as you arrive home.

I hope you found these tips helpful and are in the mood to create that understated yet definitive moment in your entryway or hallway!
