How to Select and Style Wall Pieces.

Picking a piece of wall art can be a serious struggle. Because let’s face it;, a wall piece is the finishing touch or bouncing off point for your room. It encompasses the entire feeling you want your room to be - or at least it should! Here’s a couple of pro tips to get the perfect piece to set the tone!

Approach.

Use wall art as your bouncing board. Consider colours that speak to you and your interest/hobbies. Do you like to travel? Or are you obsessed with fashion and style? My advice would be to find a piece that resonates with those two elements.

I feel like abstract art has a place in amongst the wall art scene. However, I feel like photographic prints are a much more approachable price-wise and resonate a little more with who you are. It's a way to show someone who's living in your space if you weren't around. So for me; I like beige, soft neutrals and love to escape the city and return to my roots in country scenes. So I'm naturally drawn to landscape shots.

One thing that also ups a wall art price is framing. Half the time you'll find the frame costs more than the piece itself, which is why I'm always looking for a place that sells wall pieces and frames in one sweet package.

I feel like The Lens Collective is the perfect balance of quality and custom wall pieces. They feature incredibly talented local Australian photographers and offer a high quality, museum-grade framing service made from Tasmanian Oak.

The Lens Collective pieces feel personal, real and curated to suit an array of styles and spaces. They feel refined and the quality of the prints and craftsmanship of the frames it's next level! The pricing is super reasonable too given its 100% Australian designed and made. It feels good to know that you can support Australian businesses and local craftsman/photographers.

Pick a Size/Number of Pieces

When it comes to selecting a size, you have to look at the amount of wall space there is to cover, along with meeting a nice symmetrical balance. Also, take note of how many pieces you intend on placing on the wall.

One piece

Perfect for vignettes. Create corners of personality with one hero piece accompanied by small decor and things you've collected and love.

Pairs / Trios

Lots of Two or Three’s in small/medium size pieces are perfect for creating good flow down a hallway, narrow wall or frame a large item of furniture be it a sofa or console. It creates effortless symmetry and grounds the space.

Five or more

Create a focal point in your entryway, stairwell or bedroom with an assortment of different sized pieces to curate your own unique curated gallery.

Ways to style

Rest it up against the wall

Resting against a wall is an excellent option for those who can't hang anything up in their rental or dorm. Or even just as a stylistic choice. A clustered vignette of collectables is so en vogue atm with modern eclecticism coming more into fashion.

On the floor there's something super chic and cool about resting large works on the ground. It's effortless, understated and has the right amount of "oomph." It looks good in urban industrial scenes to more French, fashion inspired apartments. This style has something for everyone.

Hang it up

The classic will always stand the test of time. Hanging your work on the wall draws direct attention and focus. Place slightly above eye level to give it a gallery-like feel. A cool eclectic option is to place a piece of art in front of a bookcase. It's a traditional way of styling that's making a slow comeback. So try it if you dare to be ahead of a trend!

Pro tip!

Don't neglect your kitchen, laundry and bathrooms. Each space deserves some love, and there's always a piece that speaks to whatever area you're in. I reckon a gorgeous travel shot along the coast is so beautiful for a wet space.

All n all, get exploring and find a piece that either starts or finishes the story of your space. And not rely too heavily on it to do all the hard work for you. Wall pieces are like the crown and jewels of a room. So it deserves the rest of the outfit (i.e. your furniture) to suit it.
